The program provides a thorough, objective, and consistent evaluation of company performance so clients and contractors can identify, monitor, and mitigate risks more effectively. Wolverine Fire Protection Co.’s recent National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) project with McCarthy Mortenson JV has been named ENR Midwest’s 2023 Project of the Year. The $1.25-billion project involved the construction of a state-of-the-art biocontainment laboratory dedicated to the study of diseases that threaten the United States’ food supply and public health. The 715,000 sq. ft. complex will replace the aging Plum Island Animal Disease Centre, improving the nation’s ability to conduct research, develop vaccines, diagnose emerging diseases, and train veterinarians. The complex contains a main laboratory building with biosafety levels 2, 3, 4, and BSL4, a central utility plant, a shipping building, a wastewater treatment plant, and a visitor center. These features and the unprecedented resiliency of the structure led to the NBAF facility being named the ENR Midwest’s Project of the Year.
